Martha Sharp Crawford or Sunny von Bülow was a prominent socialite and heiress who spent almost 28 years in a persistent vegetative state following her collapse on December 21st 1980. Some controversy has surrounded the circumstances of this collapse which caused brain damage which invariably preceeds PVS. Her husband, Claus von Bulow, was convicted of her murder but this was overturned on appeal. Sunny sufferered from reactive hypoglycemia, which relates to low blood sugar, which may have contributed to the onset of PVS. She died in care on the 6th of December 2008.
